Ryan Perkins, PhD is an Associate Professor for the Department of Kinesiology at Chico State. Aging presents many inherent challenges to health and fitness. For example, our cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and nervous system (i.e., memory, cognition, and mental health) all slowly lose their effectiveness as we age. Fortunately, structured exercise is regularly shown to slow these primary effects of aging, serving as a break on the aging process. They will highlight how the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and nervous systems slowly lose function as we age. Furthermore, they will discuss how exercise is a well-established countermeasure to these effects of aging and provide actionable, practical, exercise training advice.
